YouLead
In Brief

YouLead is a joint initiative of MS Training Centre for Development Cooperation (MSTCDC) and the East African Community (EAC) in Arusha Tanzania. H.E Jakaya Kikwete, former President of Tanzania is YouLead Africa’s current Patron.

YouLead Summit is YouLead’s annual climax event and is now Africa’s largest and most diverse forum of young leaders, mentors, government policy makers, development partners, private sector, academia, media and civil society from all over Africa to craft responses to the continent’s rapidly growing youth population, their challenges and opportunities. Since 2017 YouLead Summit is convened annually by MS Training Centre for Development Cooperation (MSTCDC) and the East African Community (EAC) in Arusha Tanzania.

Since 2019, for a more sustainable engagement with youth beyond just an annual event, YouLead Summit has become YouLead Program and now YouLead Africa - One Young Africa aimed at crafting responses to challenges and opportunities facing Africa’s youth and working toward solutions for a prosperous continent.

Youth in Politics

YouLead Summit

We convene the annual YouLead Summit co-hosted with the East African Community and other partners. YouLead Summit is YouLead’s annual climax event since 2017 and is now East Africa’s largest forum of young leaders, mentors, government officials and youth organizations representatives from all the 6 EAC Partner States (Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan) to focus on crafting responses to the region’s rapidly growing youth population, their challenges and opportunities. It now YouLead Summit Africa, with regional YouLead Summit to be organised prior to the continental YouLead Summit each.

Two focus areas define conversations at YouLead Summit:

a) Youth in Politics - how youth leadership can be reinvented and entrenched)

b) Youth in Business and Enterprise - how youth might meaningfully engage in national and cross border entrepreneurship/business in East Africa taking advantage of an already existing enabling regional policy and institutional environment). Over 1000 youth leaders, mentors, government officials, youth issues experts participate in each YouLead Summit edition in Arusha Tanzania and via internet mediated online platforms, and many more others participate at country level through pre-summit events.

East Africa Under 40 Political Leaders Forum

Debate and dialogue hosted annually on the sidelines of the YouLead Summit focused on interrogating the prevailing political trajectory with the aim of shaping a youth narrative on inclusive governance for young people in East Africa today, addressing key issues (helping and hindering factors) affecting youth voice, participation and representation

East African Youth Forum on Peace

Annual debate and dialogue space to place youth experiences and aspirations on peace and security at the top of regional governance agenda. Youth leaders, policymakers, development partners and other stakeholders come together to discuss, showcase and devise means to cooperate on solutions, change, and advance innovations for a better, safe, and peaceful world for young people

Youth Governance Architecture Studies

Conducting research across Africa on the enabling Environment for youth participation in political and economic governance

The Elected Young Leaders Performance and Accountability Peer-Review Mechanism

The Elected Young Leaders Performance and Accountability Peer-Review Mechanism seek to provide a structure and practice to hold young representatives accountable for their promises, while they compete for different positions, and for their performance while they are in offices. Specifically, will account for their time in office while bridging the gap between the young people and their representatives. In fact, with evident digital divide and disconnection/exclusion of young people at grassroots level, further exacerbated by the exclusion of most vulnerable youth - including young women - remains relevant establishing such a platform to bring these pluralities of voices guided by a bottom-up approach establishing organically such a mechanism.

The East African Youth Dream - the East Africa We Want

Support to the EAC Youth Ambassadors in compilation of National Youth Dream Country and consolidating into an East African Youth Dream and Youth having their say on the ideal East African Community, facilitating their voices on aspirations for the desired regional integration needs and outcomes.

Annual EAC University Students’ Debate

Support to the EAC Youth Ambassadors to pursual the EAC University Students’ Debate Model, an interactive and representational style of debating aimed at educating, discussing and making resolutions among the Youth in East Africa to nurture a bond of “East Africaness” with a distinct East African identity that is highly desirable. The objective of the Debate Model is to exchange information, share ideas and cultivate common ground on regional integration issues among the students and youth in the Community.

Annual High -level EAC Youth Ambassadors dialogue

Support to the EAC Youth Ambassadors to organise the High Level EAC Youth Ambassadors Dialogue initiative was launched after the success of the 1st EAC Youth Ambassadors Dialogue 2018 , which took place at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha , Tanzania which aims to promote Co- Intergenerational Dialogue amongst young leaders and key decision makers styled in a sit at the table setting where youth ambassadors share panels with High level Government leaders ( Ministers ) , High level Foreign mission representatives ( Ambassadors ) ,High Level United Nations / African Union representatives and more of the same caliber.

Youth Participation in Election Observation Missions in Africa

Support to the EAC Youth Ambassadors - capacitate and facilitate youth to participate in election observation mission in EAC Partner States. This has been successfully piloted in Tanzania (2020) and Uganda (2021) and pilot observation methodology is to be scaled up to other African countries both in local and national elections such as Presidential and parliamentary elections as more partners express interest and resources become available.

Youth-centered Democracy Monitoring Studies

Cross-country comparative studies focused on studying the varieties of democracy and democratic practices in the African context and the multifaceted (but often contested) leadership and regime typologies and what they mean for nation building and democratic development. We engage youth in related participatory studies as a means to creating awareness around and promoting democratic values.
