Summary of AfCFTA - YIAP | GOAL

Amplified Continental mobilization, Awareness, Engagement, and Participation of African young people between the ages of 18 and 35 years in the Popularization and Implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA)

Objective 1

Through a continental scoping study, establish the extent to which African young people between the ages of 18 and 35 years (especially those with a leadership role) are currently aware of the AfCFTA, and their perspectives on ways they could participate in implementation

Objective 2

Based on the findings of the continental scoping study, build the awareness and knowledge capacity of African young people between the ages of 18 and 35 years to position themselves as key stakeholders and contributors in accelerating the implementation of the AfCFTA

Objective 3

Map and mobilize government, development partners, private sector and other relevant stakeholders to meaningfully engage with and facilitate African young people between the ages of 18 and 35 years and support them to harness their demographic power, innovative minds and technological agility to create solutions for cross border trade such as e-commerce platforms

  • Develop online multi-stakeholder community of interest of youth and policy makers in AfCFTA

2021 Milestones & 2022 Activities

AfCFTA YIAP 2021 ACTIVITIES SUMMARY

  • 1. Undertook a Continental scoping study on AfCFTA Youth Inclusion (April 2021). Report ready. (4,400 direct respondents, over 30,000 African youth reached)
  • 2. Continental digital youth consultations on the ideal technology-driven African common market (July 2021). 221 participants.
  • 3. A continental essay competition on the AfCFTA (Aug-Sep 2021). 600 submissions
  • 4. A continental debate competition on the AfCFTA (Aug- Sep 2021). 121 applications

ACTIVITIES SUMMARY

5. Continental Young Leaders and Policy Makers Summer School (Bootcamp) on AfCFTA (Nov 2021). 30 participants from across Africa.

6. Bootcamp included an Africa future scenarios workshop drawing on futuristic scenarios of what is to be expected of the AfCFTA and AU agenda 2063 by young people

CONTINENTAL AfCTA YOUTH INCLUSION REPORT & BOOTCAMP

  • 1. Findings and recommendations of the report were highlighted and were adopted/used for the boot camp curriculum
  • 2. The report informed all our activities for 2021; including the debates, essay, and boot camp

BOOTCAMP HIGHLIGHTS

  • 1. Faculty of 4, drawn from Trade, Technical, and design thinking fields
  • 2. Composition of delegates - 50-50. 16 countries, from all RECs.
  • 3. Selected from Essay, debate competitions and an open call
  • 4. Also included collaborating partners.

Bootcamp Outcomes

  • 1. Creation of the Independent Continental Youth Advisory Council on the AfCFTA (ICOYACA)

  • 3. There’s an exponential increase in interest on the AfCFTA from African Youth

  • 1. REC-based Virtual launch and presentation of outcomes of the Continental Scoping Study on AfCFTA Youth Inclusion (Feb & March 2022)
  • 2. Annual Continental and REC-based Young leaders and Policymakers Boot Camps on AfCFTA hosted (A key outcome of the inaugural BootCamp) - proposal.
  • 3. Develop An online multi-stakeholder community of interest of youth and policy makers in AfCFTA (by Aug 2022)
