Summit Report

What happened
in 2021.

The 6th YouLead Summit was unlike any that preceded it. Held against the backdrop of a global pandemic that had killed millions, shuttered economies, and disrupted education systems for hundreds of millions of young people, the 2021 summit was an act of collective defiance.

Operating on an unprecedented hybrid model, the event brought together over 250 delegates in person at MS TCDC in Arusha, while a further 180 participated virtually from across Africa and the diaspora. The format required a complete reimagining of the summit's interaction design, and it worked.

The summit's central theme, Post-Pandemic Recovery & Youth Resilience, was both timely and urgent. Discussions focused on the disproportionate economic and psychological impact of COVID-19 on youth: job losses, mental health crises, disrupted educational trajectories, and the rollback of civic freedoms under emergency laws.

The Arusha Post-Pandemic Youth Charter, adopted on the final day, was subsequently submitted to heads of state across the East African Community and to the WHO Regional Office for Africa. It called for youth inclusion in national recovery task forces and minimum allocations from COVID recovery budgets to youth enterprise.
