The Summit in Brief

One event.
A continent's worth of change.

In the heart of Nairobi, the Silicon Savannah, young African technologists challenged the assumption that technology would save Africa, arguing instead that it would only be transformative in the hands of Africans themselves.

Summit Report

What happened
in 2022.

The 7th YouLead Summit brought delegates to Nairobi, a strategic choice that placed the event at the epicentre of Africa's growing technology ecosystem. With a theme centred on digital transformation, the summit explored how technology could accelerate youth employment, civic engagement, and Pan-African economic integration.

Discussions were grounded in hard data: youth unemployment across sub-Saharan Africa remains above 60% in some countries, yet the digital economy is projected to contribute $180 billion to the continent's GDP by 2025. The gap between potential and realisation was the summit's central tension.

The Innovation Pitch Competition was a landmark moment, the first time YouLead had formally created a platform for entrepreneurial youth to present solutions to a live panel of investors and development finance institutions. It catalysed commitments that would have taken years to secure through traditional pathways.

The Youth Digital Economy Charter, adopted unanimously on Day 4, called for digital literacy investment in public schools, youth representation in AI ethics panels, and harmonised cross-border digital trade regulations under the Africa Continental Free Trade Area framework.
