What happened
in 2023.
The 8th YouLead Summit convened at MS TCDC in Arusha, Tanzania, the event's spiritual home and Africa's diplomatic heartbeat. Over five transformative days, 300+ young leaders from 23 African countries engaged in high-level dialogue, hands-on working groups, and strategic advocacy sessions.
The summit's three thematic pillars, Peace & Security, Justice, and Green Transition, were chosen to reflect the most urgent convergence points in Africa's development journey, aligned with UNSCR 2250, the AU 2023 reparations agenda, and SDG 13.
Key discussions centred on the stark reality that only 6% of Africa's SDG targets are currently on track. Delegates challenged governments, institutions, and the private sector to move beyond incremental reform and embrace the transformative potential of Africa's youth demographic.
The working groups produced three formal communiqués that were delivered to AU Commission representatives, UNDP, and UNFPA. The summit closed with a powerful Youth Pledge ceremony, a public commitment from every delegate to carry forward the outcomes into their communities and governments.
From dialogue to concrete commitments.
Adopted the Arusha Youth Declaration on Green Transition, submitted to AU Commission.
Established a cross-border youth mediation network spanning 12 conflict-affected regions.
Launched the Youth Peace Monitor, a digital tool for tracking UNSCR 2250 implementation.
Secured commitments from 3 governments to increase youth council advisory mandates.
Produced a Pan-African Youth Green Transition Agenda tabled at COP28.
